Art in the Junior School

Visual Art extends the imagination and encourages creative expression in all our pupils.

Visual Art

Our Junior School Visual Art classroom is a vibrant space where we nurture a love of and appreciation for art.

We believe that every child has artistic capabilities and we guide each student to develop her unique approach to creative expression. We celebrate the gift that art bestows, which is to look at the world with wonderment and awe.

Our aim is the development of sophisticated artistic and creative thinking skills, and a deep understanding of the role and value of art for the individual and greater society. An annual art exhibition further allows for the development of curating skills.

A strong focus on whole-brain development and a holistic learning experience proves an enriching journey for our pupils. Moreover, expanding on our creativity promotes a Growth Mindset and allows for continuous growth. We believe that creative thinking is vital in a Fourth Industrial Revolution world, a skill that is honed from a young age in our Art room.

The Junior School art curriculum has a strong focus on South African art, both past and current artists. A combination of art theory, philosophy and practical skills prepare our students for an advanced Senior School art programme.

Creative expression forms part of self-care and mindfulness, which we believe is a significant gift to ourselves. Beyond a subject, we encourage creative expression as a life-long practice.
