Music Centre

Roedean School Music Centre

Evolving heritage: support our music centre expansion

Music is not just an art form, it is an experience that nurtures creativity, discipline, and collaboration. Our Music department has flourished since the original Hersov Music Centre which was built in 1973 with the support of the Hersov family, for which we remain grateful.

Fit for the future

The music centre has nurtured musical excellence for decades, but our growing Music department requires expanded facilities to match its evolving needs.

What we’re building

We envision a thoughtfully designed expansion that extends upwards. This will allow us to preserve our cherished gardens while enhancing the existing structure. Here’s what you can look forward to:

  • A newly designed, state-of-the-art tiered auditorium with impeccable acoustics, accommodating 200 seats for performances and concerts.
  • Large, dedicated practice spaces and rooms for the choir, orchestra, marimbas and music history and theory learning, an art and culture classroom, a vibrant garage band room, and smaller teaching rooms for individual instruments.
  • Enhanced facilities for staff and students including a comfortable staff room, an office for the director of music, and additional lavatories to support our growing music community.

Innovative, sympathetic design

The new extension will seamlessly integrate with the existing structure, reflecting the school’s commitment to both tradition and innovation. This will be achieved through:

  • Harmonious integration with the original building while introducing new materials and finishes for a distinct modern feel.
  • Retaining and refurbishing key elements of the existing building, addressing wear and tear while preserving the building’s character. The facility will be enhanced by large new glazed windows offering panoramic views of the gardens and a glimpse into the vibrant activities within.
  • Collaborating with an expert acoustics consultant to make sure that every note played and sung in the new centre is delivered with clarity and precision.

How you can help

The new centre is an investment in the future of music education at Roedean. By supporting the Hersov Music Centre expansion, you will help create a space where passion meets possibility, where students can explore and achieve their musical potential in an inspiring environment
