A wide variety of Music ensembles and individual instrument tuition is available to our pupils.

Music

Overview

Music forms an integral part of the daily life at Roedean and students are strongly encouraged to take up a musical instrument. Our various musical groups are often seen performing for school engagements and other prestigious calendar events.

Roedean School has both Contemporary and Classical Music Departments, in which the girls receive tuition in instruments ranging from drums and bass guitar to piano and orchestral instruments.

The Contemporary Department accommodates rehearsal facilities for the Orchestra, Jazz Band and the Rock and Pop Bands, with teaching facilities for the individual instruments.

The Classical Department accommodates practice rooms and teaching facilities for individual tuition. Practical and theory examinations are offered from the Trinity School of London and The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music in Classical, Jazz, Rock, and Pop.

The annual Music Picnic in late August is truly a highlight on the events calendar. Picnic baskets are hauled out from the backs of closets, hats are dusted off, and the Music Department prepares for a celebration of sound. Both Junior and Senior School music groups perform for the enjoyment of the Roedean community.

We are honoured to have hosted the Roedean Music Competition in collaboration with Yamaha and Lovemore Music since 2004. Generously sponsored by these two organisations, this competition welcomes the finest talent from schools throughout Gauteng. After several days of adjudication, finalists are chosen to perform at a prestigious Gala Evening where the category winners are decided.
