Teacher Internship Programme

Teacher Internship Programme

Overview

Bopa Thuto Trust is an innovative education trust and registered Public Benefit Organisation (PBO). They invest in deserving young people through tertiary education bursaries. With the help of donors and partners, they have invested in excess of R40 million in over 1000 bursaries and scholarships over the past 15 years. Through access to tertiary education, the lives of their beneficiaries have changed for the better, with most of them moving on to successful careers in South Africa.

Roedean has been identified by Bopa Thuto Trust as a lead school for their teacher development programme. As such, Roedean has been responsible for designing and implementing the school-based integration of best-practice teaching and the overall professionalisation of the intern teachers.

The purpose of the programme is to contribute to the pool of highly competent black teachers of Mathematics, Physical Sciences, and Life Sciences in South Africa. We are proud to state that some of these intern teachers have been appointed as full-time teachers at Roedean.

Teacher Internship Programme

Programme Objectives

The intention of the programme is to:

Entice high-achieving graduates into the teaching profession;

Provide a two-year internship, making the candidates highly employable.

Experience has shown that teacher-graduates who have been immersed in a classroom and practice-based programme such as this, are much more likely to find employment than those who have not.

By providing significant mentoring, ensuring that the students develop into effective and inspirational teachers within a defined period, and because of the strong psycho-social and academic support, the interns are equipped to take on leadership roles at schools in the future.
