Lower V and Middle V Curriculum
Part of the Lower V and Middle V (Grades 8 and 9) academic curriculum has been re-designed into modules to reduce academic stress and an overwhelming number of subjects.
Previously, Lower V students studied 14 subjects concurrently, while those in Middle V studied 13. Most of the subjects were examinable and were assessed on a regular basis by formal testing. Many pupils found such a large number of subjects overwhelming and struggled with the number of tests.
Changes were then made to the timetable, number of lessons per subject and manner of assessment. The number of lessons allocated to Life Orientation has increased to allow the pupils more opportunities to discuss life issues. Students in Lower V now study a maximum of seven formally assessed subjects at any time. A course in Critical Thinking was introduced in 2020 and is a mandatory subject for all Middle V pupils. It has proven to be most successful, and pupils have enjoyed the opportunity to discuss the ethics around current issues.
Our curriculum is dynamic, and we constantly re-evaluate our offering to ensure we offer exciting and different elective subjects or courses.

Subject Assessment
In 2020, Mathematics, the languages and Subject Music became continuous subjects studied throughout the year. These subjects continue to be assessed by both tests and examinations.
Life Orientation (which includes Cognitive Skills), Computer Skills and Design & Technology (which includes coding and robotics), as well as Physical Education, are also taught throughout the year but, of these, only Computer Skills and Design & Technology are assessed. These assessments do not take the form of formal testing.
All other subjects are taught in six-week modules and most assessments take the form of alternatives to testing.
