Roedean’s Ongoing Commitment to Ending Period Poverty

 

At Roedean School (SA), we believe that education is only truly possible when dignity is protected. As we mark five years of partnership with Blossom Care Solutions, we reflect on a shared commitment that continues to shape meaningful change for young girls affected by period poverty.

Period poverty remains one of the most persistent yet under-addressed barriers to education in South Africa. It refers not only to the inability to afford sanitary products, but also to limited access to menstrual health education and adequate sanitation facilities. For many school-going girls, this results in missed school days, often estimated at 3 to 5 days per month, reinforcing cycles of inequality and vulnerability.

At Roedean, we hold a clear conviction: no learner should miss school due to a lack of access to basic dignity products.

A Partnership Creating Measurable Impact

Since the inception of this initiative, the Roedean community has demonstrated the power of collective action:

  • 2022 – R54,000
  • 2023 – R18,500
  • 2024 – R35,875
  • 2025 – R71,201

To date, this support has enabled just under 600 girls to receive sanitary pads for an entire year. This equates to approximately 6,936 packs of sanitary pads distributed through our CSR partner, the Phedišang Community Development Project in Limpopo.

This is not only a story of funding – it is a story of restored dignity, improved attendance, and sustained educational opportunity.

 

2026 Campaign – Expanding Our Collective Impact

Our 2026 fundraising campaign is now open and will culminate in a student-led outreach programme in Phedišang from 5 to 11 August. During this period, our students will engage directly in a women’s health and dignity initiative within the community, deepening their understanding of social responsibility through lived experience.

Working alongside Blossom Care Solutions, we are reminded of what is possible when communities unite behind a shared purpose. A previous contribution of R71,201 enabled the provision of 2,724 sanitary pads, supporting 227 girls for an entire year. The impact is both tangible and transformative.

This year, we are calling on our community to build on this momentum by doubling, and ideally tripling, last year’s contribution.

A contribution of R250 provides a girl with sanitary pads for an entire year – ensuring consistent school attendance and restoring dignity at a critical stage of her development.

Blossom Care Solutions

Blossom Care Solutions is a mission-driven social enterprise focused on manufacturing, distributing, and selling sanitary pads within township and rural markets across South Africa. Beyond addressing period poverty, the organisation advances educational access for girls in Grades 5 to 12 while creating sustainable employment opportunities through a women-centred social franchise model that supports small, Black-owned, women-led businesses.

Phedišang Community Development Project

The Phedišang Community Development Project is a registered NGO based in the Maruleng District of Limpopo. The organisation provides holistic care and support to vulnerable children across five centres, including psychosocial services, nutrition programmes, homework supervision, and assistance with healthcare and social welfare access.

Why Collaboration Between Nursery Schools and Grade 0 Matters

 

A child’s educational journey is shaped long before formal schooling begins. The transition from nursery school to Grade 0 represents a significant milestone, one that lays the foundation for future academic success, social development, and a lifelong love of learning. As educators, it is our collective responsibility to ensure that this transition is as seamless, supportive, and enriching as possible.

This was at the heart of our recent Grade R to Grade 0 Forum, which brought together educators from a range of nursery schools to engage in meaningful dialogue about the foundations of learning and the evolving needs of young children. The forum provided an invaluable opportunity to strengthen partnerships between schools and deepen our understanding of the educational experiences that children bring with them as they move into Grade 0.

A particular highlight of the forum was a presentation by Mrs Judy Innes, Headmistress of St John’s Bridge Nursery School. Her presentation on Early Childhood Development explored the significant impact of the early years on a child’s cognitive, social, emotional, and physical development. She emphasised the importance of developmentally appropriate learning experiences, the value of play-based education, and the need to foster curiosity, resilience, independence, and a strong sense of belonging from an early age. Her insights served as a powerful reminder that the foundations laid during a child’s formative years have a lasting influence on their future learning, wellbeing and overall development.

Engaging with nursery schools allows us to gain a deeper understanding of the learning environments, teaching approaches, and developmental experiences that have shaped each child before they enter formal schooling. It also reinforces the importance of maintaining strong partnerships between nursery schools and Grade 0 programmes. As schools increasingly welcome children from diverse educational settings, these conversations help ensure continuity in learning, support each child’s unique developmental journey, and contribute to a smoother transition into formal education.

The forum also highlighted how collaboration enables schools to support one another throughout the admissions and transition process. By sharing perspectives, observations, and best practices, educators are better equipped to understand the strengths, needs, and readiness of children entering Grade 0 from different nursery schools. These discussions play a critical role in bridging potential gaps in learning and development while fostering a greater appreciation for the varied teaching methodologies and educational philosophies that children may have experienced.

Reflecting on the event, Mrs Keshma Patel, Head of Junior School, said:

“Children thrive when the adults around them work in partnership. Bringing together leaders in early childhood education creates valuable opportunities to share knowledge, exchange best practices, and deepen our collective understanding of how young children learn and grow.”

Importantly, this exchange of knowledge benefits not only the children but also the educators who guide them. The forum created a space for professional connection, reflection, and shared learning. It reminded us that while schools may differ in approach, we are united by a common goal: to nurture confident, capable, and curious young learners.

There is tremendous value in educators learning from one another. Through collaboration, we gain fresh perspectives, challenge our assumptions, and discover innovative practices that strengthen our own teaching. These professional relationships create a network of support that ultimately enhances the quality of education we provide.

We were also privileged to have Roedean School (SA) Chairperson and Old Girl, Ms Nicky Fitzgerald, in attendance. Her presence reinforced our shared commitment to educational excellence and lifelong learning, while underscoring the value of initiatives that promote collaboration, and investment in the future of education and the young learners we serve.

Perhaps most importantly, strong connections between nursery schools and Grade 0 educators help build confidence among all stakeholders, including educators, school leaders, and families. When there is open communication and a shared commitment to each child’s success, parents can feel reassured that the next step in their child’s educational journey is in capable and caring hands.

The Grade R to Grade 0 Forum served as a powerful reminder that the foundations of learning are built not only within classrooms but also through collaboration, partnership, and a collective investment in the future of our children. By working together, we create continuity, strengthen transitions, and ensure that every child is given the very best start to their formal school experience.
