Following the success of last year’s edition, the Roedean Art Fair returns with an even more ambitious vision, expanding its reach, deepening its conversations and reaffirming its place as a meaningful fixture on Johannesburg’s cultural calendar.
Last year’s event brought together some of South Africa’s most respected voices in the visual arts, including Wilhelm van Rensburg, Arisha Maharaj and Richard “Specs” Ndimande, alongside works from Artist Proof Studio and The Gallery. One of the fair’s defining moments was the opportunity for Roedean students to exhibit alongside these acclaimed practitioners. The result was a powerful exchange between emerging and established voices, demonstrating that creativity flourishes when generations of artists share space, ideas and perspectives.
This year, the fair continues to build on that momentum with an exceptional programme of thought leaders and industry experts. Roedean is proud to welcome Lerato Bereng, Director at Stevenson, and Karabo Morule, CEO of Capital Art, as featured speakers. Bereng will present Take a Walk with Me Through a Gallery, offering audiences a unique perspective on navigating gallery spaces and engaging with contemporary art, while Morule will deliver I’m Actuary an Artist, an insightful conversation exploring artistic identity, creativity and the evolving role of artists in today’s cultural landscape. Additional speakers will be announced in the coming weeks, further enriching a programme designed to inspire collectors, artists, students and art enthusiasts alike.
Set within the inspiring environment of Roedean School, the Art Fair offers a distinctive experience that extends beyond the traditional gallery setting. It is a place where education, creativity and community converge, creating an accessible yet sophisticated destination for both seasoned collectors and those beginning their collecting journey. Established collectors will encounter exceptional works and engaging conversations with leading figures in the art world. In contrast, first-time collectors will find an inviting space to explore contemporary art, develop their understanding of the market and collect with confidence.
What distinguishes this year’s edition is its heightened focus on knowledge sharing and meaningful engagement. Through conversations with artists, curators, gallery directors and collectors, visitors will gain valuable insights into contemporary practice, the evolving art market and the principles that underpin thoughtful collecting. The fair becomes more than an exhibition. It becomes a forum for learning, connection and cultural exchange.
For Roedean students, this experience is particularly significant. Their inclusion is not symbolic but intentional. By exhibiting alongside established practitioners and engaging directly with respected artists, curators, gallery directors and collectors, students gain first-hand exposure to professional practice, industry best practices and the many pathways within the creative economy. These invaluable interactions provide mentorship, broaden perspectives and equip students with the confidence, knowledge and networks that will serve them well beyond the classroom. They also reflect Roedean’s enduring commitment to nurturing the next generation of artists, creatives and cultural leaders.
The Roedean Art Fair is more than an annual event. It is an investment in South Africa’s creative future. By bringing together collectors, artists, galleries, educators and students in one dynamic space, it fosters meaningful relationships, broadens access to the arts and creates opportunities for emerging talent to learn from, collaborate with and ultimately contribute to the country’s vibrant artistic community.
