What happens when international theatre expertise meets the imagination and potential of young performers? Through its upcoming Junior School production of Matilda, we demonstrate how access to accomplished industry professionals can transform a school production into a powerful platform for developing confidence, creativity and talent.
Talent needs more than a stage. It needs experienced mentors, meaningful opportunities and an environment where young people are encouraged to discover what they are capable of achieving.
Our longstanding tradition of cultural development reflects this philosophy. Performing arts sit alongside academics and sport as an important part of preparing confident, creative and well-rounded young women.
Central to this approach is connecting students with accomplished practitioners who bring industry experience, specialist knowledge and fresh perspectives into the learning environment.
Roedean’s upcoming Junior School production of Matilda demonstrates this approach in action. With two casts of more than 100 students each, the production combines ambitious theatrical direction with opportunities for young performers of varying abilities and experience.
International experience meets young talent
Tim Hulse is a theatre professional who trained at London’s Guildhall School of Music and Drama between 1994 and 1997 before building a career across television and theatre.
His professional journey includes major tours throughout the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands.
During a five-month tour of Italy, he performed in more than 100 shows, an experience that shaped his understanding of preparation, consistency and discipline.
“The people coming on the 72nd performance deserved the same energy and professionalism as the first audience,” he recalls.
That experience now informs his work with Roedean’s young performers.
“I try to treat them like professional actors. When they are in rehearsals, they are there to work.”
Students are introduced to theatrical techniques including projection, articulation, character development, stage awareness, and ensemble performance.
More importantly, they gain firsthand experience of the commitment and collaboration involved in bringing a production together.
Creating opportunities for every performer
One of the defining features of Matilda is the breadth of student participation.
With more than 100 students in each cast, not every performer will have a leading role. Yet every contribution matters.
“If you are on stage, someone will be looking at you,” the director explains.
Rather than identifying talent solely through confidence or stage presence, he focuses on recognising the individual energy each student brings and helping her develop it.
This creates opportunities for students who may never have considered themselves performers to explore new abilities.
His proudest moment so far has been seeing students rehearse independently in the playground.
“When I walk past a group of students practicing in the playground without anyone telling them to.”
It is a powerful reflection of what meaningful engagement can achieve: students taking ownership of their learning, developing self-discipline and finding genuine enjoyment in the creative process.
The value of investing in performing arts
A production of this scale brings together multiple creative disciplines.
Costume design establishes character and visual identity. Choreography introduces movement and expression. Music creates emotional connection, while acting and stagecraft unite these elements through storytelling.
Each contributes to the audience’s experience while giving students opportunities to explore different aspects of performance.
Working with experienced practitioners also introduces students to the expectations and techniques of professional theatre, much as aspiring athletes benefit from accomplished coaches.
The benefits extend beyond the stage.
Students develop communication, teamwork, concentration, and adaptability. They learn to accept feedback, support one another and work towards a shared goal.
For some, the experience may inspire a future in the creative industries. For others, it will strengthen skills that support their academic development, leadership and personal growth.
The lasting value of theatre lies not only in what students achieve on stage, but in the confidence and capabilities they carry into other areas of their lives.
Why Matilda matters
Based on Roald Dahl’s story, with songs by Tim Minchin, Matilda celebrates courage, imagination, individuality and the transformative influence of education.
At its centre is a young girl who refuses to allow her circumstances to determine her future.
Equally significant is Miss Honey, whose belief in Matilda demonstrates the difference an educator can make by recognising and nurturing potential.
The story reflects a principle central to Roedean’s educational approach: young people flourish when their abilities are recognised, supported and challenged.
With its memorable characters, music and storytelling, Matilda also provides a platform for Junior School students to share their creativity with the wider community.
As opening night approaches, the director has an ambitious vision for the audience.
“What I hope is that the audience forgets it’s a group of Primary school children and feels like they’ve sat and watched a West End Show!”
Beyond the final curtain
For Roedean, Matilda represents more than an end-of-year production. It reflects the school’s commitment to giving students access to specialist guidance, creative opportunities and experiences that broaden their horizons.
Not every student will pursue a career in theatre. But every student can benefit from learning to express herself confidently, collaborate with others and approach challenges with determination.
When schools connect young talent with the right expertise and opportunities, they do more than create memorable performances. They help young people discover abilities that will serve them long after they leave the stage.
That is the enduring value of Roedean’s cultural tradition.
